Understand peptides.
Explore the evidence.

Peptide medicines are changing care for specific health conditions. Learn what they do, where human research supports a benefit, and which questions still need answers.

Evidence and U.S. status checked October 21, 2026. Educational topics; availability and clinical suitability require confirmation.

THE FOUNDATIONS

Signals in the body.
Medicines with a purpose.

Peptides are chains of amino acids, the building blocks used to make proteins. Some act as signals in the body. A peptide medicine can interact with a receptor or biological pathway; the effect depends on the particular molecule, formulation and route.

“Peptide therapy” is a broad description. It includes established prescription medicines and experimental compounds. It is different from PRP, stem-cell therapy and acoustic-wave treatment, and it does not automatically mean tissue regeneration.

A convincing explanation connects the exact product to a diagnosis and a meaningful outcome: less disease burden, better function or a lower risk of a specific health event. A change in a hormone level, a laboratory experiment or a testimonial answers a different question. In this directory, GH means growth hormone and IGF-1 means insulin-like growth factor 1, a hormone involved in GH activity.

KNOW WHICH QUESTION YOU ARE ASKING

Approval. Access. Evidence.
Three different things.

These distinctions help you understand a proposal before comparing benefits, risks and cost.

01 / APPROVED PRODUCT

Which medicine and use?

FDA approval concerns a finished product, its labeling and the supporting evidence. Printing the name of an ingredient used in an approved medicine on a different vial does not make that vial an approved medicine.

02 / COMPOUNDING

Why a custom preparation?

Compounding can address an individual medical need an approved medicine cannot meet. The preparation is not FDA approved. Applicable federal and state requirements still matter.

03 / CLINICAL RESEARCH

What has been shown in people?

Research can be promising before benefits and long-term risks are known. A study's size, comparison group, outcomes, route and follow-up determine what it can tell you.

CURRENT FEDERAL UPDATE / OCTOBER 21, 2026

A policy under review is not an issued approval.

The White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) lists an FDA peptide compounding access policy received October 14, 2026 as pending review. FDA's July advisory meeting considered several peptides; advisory recommendations are non-binding. Neither step establishes that a peptide has been approved as safe and effective for a proposed use.

Approved products · specific usesWeight & metabolism

Semaglutide

Wegovy; Ozempic and Rybelsus have their own labels

A GLP-1 receptor agonist used in specific prescription products for metabolic disease.

Read the evidence, limits & risks

What the evidence supports

Wegovy has weight-management and cardiovascular indications for eligible patients. Its injection also has a defined accelerated-approval indication for noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), an inflammatory fatty-liver disease, with moderate-to-advanced scarring (F2-F3 fibrosis). Formulation and patient eligibility matter.

What it does not establish

This does not establish an anti-aging or tissue-regeneration benefit. Ozempic, Rybelsus and Wegovy are not interchangeable indications or instructions.

What to discuss

Discuss gastrointestinal effects, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, dehydration and kidney injury, pregnancy planning, and the boxed thyroid-tumor warning. A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or a diagnosis of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, is a contraindication.

Sermorelin

Historical brand: Geref

Signals the pituitary to release growth hormone; commonly discussed in wellness clinics.

Read the evidence, limits & risks

What the evidence supports

Geref previously had childhood growth-hormone deficiency and diagnostic indications. FDA determined its discontinued products were not withdrawn for safety or effectiveness reasons.

What it does not establish

That history does not make today's compounded adult wellness products FDA approved or establish anti-aging benefits. A hormone response alone is not a patient-important outcome.

What to discuss

Ask why GH-directed treatment is appropriate, what clinical outcome is expected, and how glucose, IGF-1, adverse effects and product quality will be reviewed.

Unapproved · limited clinical outcomesGrowth hormone signaling

CJC-1295

Drug affinity complex (DAC) and no-DAC names require exact identification

A growth hormone-releasing hormone analog studied for hormonal effects.

Read the evidence, limits & risks

What the evidence supports

Short randomized studies in healthy adults showed increases in GH and IGF-1.

What it does not establish

Those studies did not establish better injury recovery, strength, daily function or longevity. Do not assume every product called CJC-1295 matches the studied molecule.

What to discuss

Long-term safety and meaningful benefit need better evidence; FDA identifies safety concerns. Combining it with another peptide does not establish the combination's effectiveness.

Sources: [62] Teichman et al. / Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, [86] FDA

Unapproved · route-specific evidenceGrowth hormone signaling

Ipamorelin

Often marketed in CJC-1295 or tesamorelin blends

A growth hormone secretagogue investigated in human clinical research.

Read the evidence, limits & risks

What the evidence supports

One randomized study used intravenous ipamorelin after bowel surgery.

What it does not establish

That setting does not validate subcutaneous anti-aging, muscle-building or injury-recovery programs. Results from one route do not prove safety of another.

What to discuss

Ask about the exact molecule, route and evidence; safety information for common wellness regimens is incomplete.

Sources: [63] Beck et al. / International Journal of Colorectal Disease, [87] FDA

Unapproved · very limited human evidenceRecovery & nerve research

The 2025 TESTS sepsis trial enrolled 1,106 adults. Mortality at 28 days was 23.4% with thymosin alpha-1 versus 24.1% with placebo, without a clear mortality benefit.

What it does not establish

Sepsis research does not prove that healthy adults benefit from an immune-boosting program. Foreign approval or availability does not establish U.S. approval.

What to discuss

Benefits and safety depend on the disease, product and patient. Avoid substituting wellness claims for a diagnosis and established care.

Sources: [79] Wu et al. / BMJ, [88] FDA

Unapproved · weight-loss evidence disappointingWeight & metabolism

AOD-9604

Modified growth-hormone fragment

Promoted for fat loss, with a history of human obesity research.

Read the evidence, limits & risks

What the evidence supports

FDA's review describes a 536-patient study that did not show significant weight-loss benefit at its primary 12-week endpoint.

What it does not establish

Development for obesity was stopped. Evidence does not establish the benefits of commonly promoted subcutaneous fat-loss regimens.

What to discuss

A claim that a product avoids all growth-hormone risks does not establish its own safety or effectiveness.

QUESTIONS PATIENTS ASK

Clear answers.
Useful distinctions.

Are peptides natural, and does that make them safe?

A substance can occur naturally and still cause harm when given as a medicine. A manufactured analog, a different dose or a different route can change its effects. Safety is assessed for the actual product and patient, not inferred from the word “natural.”

Sources: [44] FDA, [50] FDA-approved labeling / DailyMed, [53] FDA-approved labeling / DailyMed

Do peptides repair joints or regrow cartilage?

No class-wide conclusion is justified. Small reports involving BPC-157 cannot establish cartilage regrowth. Medicines approved for osteoporosis address specific bone-health indications and do not validate every recovery peptide or soft-tissue claim.

Sources: [56] FDA-approved labeling, [57] FDA-approved labeling, [76] Lee & Padgett / Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine

Are peptide stacks better than a single product?

A blend may be marketed under a memorable name, but that name does not establish its ingredients, quality or benefit. Ask for human evidence for the exact combination, not separate studies of different ingredients. More ingredients can also make adverse effects harder to attribute.

Sources: [44] FDA, [65] FDA, [91] FDA

Is off-label use the same as an unapproved peptide?

Off-label use means an approved drug is used differently from its approved labeling, such as for another indication. FDA has not evaluated that unapproved use. An unapproved preparation or research chemical is a separate issue; calling it off-label does not make it an approved product.

Sources: [45] FDA

Are NAD+, B12 and collagen supplements all the same thing?

No. These are different products with different roles and evidence. A clinic's “peptide” menu may contain products from several categories. Ask for the precise active ingredient and product category rather than assuming every item has the same evidence or regulatory pathway.

Why consider an evaluation now?

Persistent symptoms, weight-related illness or concerns about bone health can deserve a timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment. There is no universal peptide deadline or evidence that you must buy an experimental injection now to preserve a healing window. Start by understanding the problem and comparing suitable options.
